It is vital that our children are kept safe and feel safe. We have very robust systems in place to ensure that our children are supported and protected at all times.  All adults at our school have regular training in respect of the protection and care of our children to make sure that we know how best to keep our children safe. All staff who deal with children have a very clear duty to report any concern they may have about any child’s well-being.  Our governors make sure that all the proper guidelines are in place and are followed. All staff, governors and regular parent helpers have been cleared by the Disclosure and Barring Service as having no record which would prevent them from working with children.

Operation Encompass - Early reporting of domestic violence

Our school is part of a project which has been designed to provide early reporting of any domestic violence incidents that occur outside school, which might have an impact on a child in school. This is done through an email to the school following an incident.

The project ensures that at least one member of the school staff, known as the Key Adult, is trained to liaise with the police and to use the information that has been shared, in confidence.

In this way, we aim to support each child who has been involved in, or witnessed, a domestic abuse incident. The key adults at East Preston Infant School are Mrs Claire New and Mrs Lucy Owens. If they receive an Encompass email they will make sure that, a person the child trusts, is available to help – should the child need this. In most cases the staff in school do nothing, except keep a careful eye on the child and make sure that appropriate action is taken should there be any concerns. The confidential information will only be shared with staff who need to be updated; other staff at the school will not be informed of any details but will be asked to provide support as appropriate.

All schools have a duty to share any information with other organisations if they feel a child is at risk of being hurt. The Key Adults may contact other organisations. 

The sharing of Encompass information from the police is not usually child protection. It allows the school to be ready to help your child straight away, and it means that parents know the Key Adults are aware that something has happened. Parents are actively encouraged to come and talk to the Key Adults. We are here to support you and your children.

We are keen to offer the best support possible for our children and Operation Encompass has already been extremely beneficial for all those involved.

Extremism and Radicalisation

There is no place for extremist views of any kind in our school, whether from internal sources –children, staff, visiting adults, governors etc. or external sources – school community, external agencies or individuals. Any prejudice, discrimination or extremist views, including derogatory language, displayed by children, staff, visitors or parents will always be challenged and, where appropriate, dealt with.

We encourage pupils to respect the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.  We ensure that partisan political views are not promoted in the teaching of any subject in the school and where political issues are brought to the attention of the pupils, reasonably practicable steps are taken to offer a balanced presentation of opposing views to pupils.

Internet Safety

The internet can be a fantastic place for children and young people where they can talk to friends, be creative and have fun.  However, just like in the real world sometimes things can go wrong. If you or your child are worried or upset about something which has happened on the internet there is help out there, click on the link below for further advice and to report online safety concerns.

Our School Site 

A major priority for us is to keep our children safe. The gates around the school are kept closed during school hours. If you need to access the school you will need to come via the Main Reception.

A vital factor is that we keep our children safe both on and off the site. An example of this is the detailed risk assessments that are carried out before any trips take place. We use a web based system called Evolve. Risk assessments are also conducted for a range of other matters. You would be very welcome to ask to see any of them.

Travel Plan

We encourage our parents and children to cycle and scoot safely to school. There are bike and scooter racks available in different areas. We have been awarded Travel Mark 2 for our work in this area.

Keeping Safe - Children Information

We work hard to make sure that our pupils know how to keep themselves safe, for example making sure they know that they should tell an adult if they are worried about anything. We also make sure they know how to keep themselves safe out and about and at home, by having an internet safety code and inviting in outside agencies such as the police and fire service.

We also talk to the children in assemblies as well as in classes and in small groups to find out what they know and what we can do to help them.

Internet Safety

The internet can be fun but sometimes you find things that make you sad or scared. Tell your mum, dad or the person who looks after you at home if something makes you feel sad or funny inside. You can also talk to your teachers if anything upsets you and they will help.

  1. Never tell anyone who you don't know your name, where you live or which school you go to.
  2. If you are worried or unhappy about anything you see or hear on the internet, tell a grown up and they will help you.
  3. Ask an adult before using the internet or opening a message.
  4. Keep your computer password private.
  5. People who don't know you are strangers. Some people on the internet may not be who they say they are.

Worried or frightened about anything?

You can always talk to a grown-up at school if you are worried or frightened or if you want to talk to someone else you can call 'Childline', which is a place where grown-ups who are nice can help you.

Always remember to tell a grown up you like and trust if you are sad or scared about anything.
