Phonics/Spelling
Reception
In Reception the ‘Jolly Phonics’ scheme is used alongside ‘Letters and Sounds’ to deliver daily phonic lessons. The scheme is supported by sound prompt picture cards (Jolly Phonics), songs, actions and interactive stories linking to each phase. We place a lot of importance on hearing rhyming patterns which is a big focus within these sessions. There is also a character associated with the learning of phonics. 'Sound It Out Sid' helps with segmenting and blending. Each class has a display with these characters that are updated regularly with the learning focus. At the end of Reception we would expect the children to be confidently working within Phase 3.
Year 1
In Year 1 the ‘Letters and Sounds’ scheme is used alongside the ‘East Preston Infant School’ phonic scheme to deliver daily phonic lessons. The scheme is supported by sound prompt picture cards/phrases (East Preston Infant School), songs, actions and computer games. There are also characters associated with the learning of phonics/spelling. 'Sound it Out Sid' supports segmenting and blending, Spaggy the Seahorse supports spelling rules and grammar and 'Ed the Ted' supports the suffix ‘ed’. Each class has a display with these characters that are updated regularly with the learning focus. At the end of Year One we would expect the children to be working at the end of Phase 5.
Year 2
In Year 2 the ‘Letters and Sounds’ scheme is used alongside elements of ‘Read, Write, Inc’ and the ‘Appendix of the National Curriculum’ to deliver daily phonic lessons. The scheme is supported by sound prompt picture cards/phrases (East Preston Infant School), Read Write Inc Speed sound chart and computer games. 'Spagpuss' is our Year 2 character associated with the learning of phonics/spelling and grammar. Each class has a display with this character that is updated regularly with the learning focus. At the end of Year 2 we would expect the children to be secure in Phase 6 as well as knowing all the end of Year 2 Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation terminology.
